Morphing And Flash Animation Development

The word morphing is derived from metamorphosis and refers to the transformation of an object from one form to another. This change from one image to another appears as a seamless transition. Morphing can be applied in transition between still images as well as in between moving images. These days Flash designers widely use morphing to create these kinds of changes. It can keep the objects same, yet change its characteristics.
The process of morphing includes the following steps:

Have the image of the original object as a key frame
Create the last frame of the sequence
Set equal number of morph points in the first and last key frames
For smoother morph, put greater number of frames

In software generated morphing sequence, there are two options for the blend type – distributive and angular. The distributive type creates a sequence in which intermediate shapes are smoother. Angular type creates sequences that preserve apparent corners in intermediate shapes.
There are two methods for morphing based on edge count and vertex count. The edge count method equalizes the edges while the vertex count method equalizes the vertices of the objects in the two key frames.
Flash animation development is widely done these days for morphing animations in addition to frame-by-frame animations, motion tweened animations or dynamic animations. It is called Shape Tween in Flash. Shape Tween only works for vector shape and hence all other shapes like fonts, bitmaps, symbols etc are converted into vector form first.

These days, animation is also used in website designs, specially using the Flash technology. There are four basic steps for creating animation designs that are used in cartoons etc but not everywhere.

Real time computer animation applications like flight simulators, display motion sequences are produced online in response to settings of the aircraft’s cockpit controls.

The four steps used in Flash animation designs are:

Storyboard layout: The storyboard layout lists various events in the motion sequence. The events are drawn as a set of rough sketches with descriptions.

Object Definition: An object definition is given for each participant in the motion sequence and the motion of each object is specified along its path.

Key frame: A key frame is a detailed drawing of the scene at certain time intervals. Within each key frame, each object is positioned. Key frames are spaced in a such a manner that the time interval between them is not too much. If the motion is intricate, greater number of key frames are used.

Tweening: Tweening is the process of generating in-betweens or intermediate frames between the key frames. The number of these intermediate frames depends on the media that will be used to display the animation.
Film requires 24 frames per second and the graphics terminals are refreshed at the rate of 30 to 60 frames per second. Typically time intervals for motion are set up, so that there are three to five in-betweens for each pair of key frames.
